The minimum wage increase is going to have a big impact in Belleville. Chamber of Commerce CEO Jill Raycroft say they did a recent survey and found that 71% of downtown businesses with 20 or fewer employees are already paying above minimum wage. She says what the real pressure will be is how to get around the fact these people have gotten these increases because they earned them:
Raycroft says the survey also showed that four per cent of businesses say they might even close.
The minimum wage is set at $11.40, but come 2018 it will increase to $14, then $15 the following year.
