86 Munroe Street has given more than 35 local seniors access to affordable housing.
31 new units were opened yesterday (Sept 17), allowing seniors and individuals with disabilities remain in the community, living independently and supported by friends and loved ones in 31 new apartment unit.
59-year-old Susan Caron is one of those residents.
Being confined to a wheelchair after a stroke and after being diagnosed with breast cancer, she says finding an appropriate apartment was difficult.
The apartments include 27 one-bedroom units and 4 two-bedroom units – of which 5 are accessible – a shared amenity room and a laundry facility for all residents.
The apartments rent for approximately 80 per cent of the average market rate in Northumberland County and are located next to public transit, grocery and retail amenities.
Caron spoke to the importance of having these amenities in her backyard.
She says it was an emotional day seeing her apartment for the first time, and gaining back her independence.
She adds she’s even on the Accessibility Committee for the Town.
The affordable housing project, worth more than $5 million, is a shared commitment between Affordable Housing Solutions Corporation, Northumberland County Housing and Northumberland County Community and Social Services, Gay Company Limited, the Town of Cobourg, Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
There were more than 100 applications for the 31 apartments at 86 Munroe Street, a real testament to the need for affordable housing in Northumberland County.
Caron says she is being a voice for others like her.
86 Munroe Street is the third building of its kind in Cobourg, joining retirement communities, Palisade Gardens and James Club, built in 2009 and 2016 at 240 Chapel Street and which house 175 seniors.
Two and half years ago, shovels went in the ground for this project and now more good news – right next door at 82 Munroe Street, an additional 34 units will be built this fall for the general public.
