Cobourg is far less dangerous than it was a year ago.
That’s according to Macleans Magazine’s annual ‘Canada’s Most Dangerous Places’ list, which placed the town 91 out of 237 communities when it comes to violent crime, and 128 when it comes to general crime.
In those same categories last year, Cobourg came in 18 and 62 respectively.
We spoke with Cobourg Police Chief, Paul VandeGraff, who says the data can be skewed in the Macleans List.
VandeGraff adds that certain crimes can have a huge impact on the overall numbers.
The chief adds that the re-classification of crimes also impacts numbers, such as resident on resident assault in long-term care being classified as an assault, makes a community seem more dangerous even though charges are rarely filed against a resident.
VandeGraff says clearance rates aren’t taken into consideration either, which is a crucial statistic.
Overall, the chief says residents of Cobourg live in a safe town within a safe county.
