What started as a way to give the less fortunate a piece of their dignity back has grown to a community cupboard of toiletries.
That’s according to The Rose Project’s creator, Rose Wilton.
She says she orchestrated the project five years ago when she saw a need for these type of donations.
Now, the project recently opened a Personal Care Community Cupboard, located just behind Town Hall in Port Hope.
Wilton tells us it’s been a year in the making.
The cupboard came together with help from the Municipality of Port Hope, Wilton and Rose Project board chair, Pam Royl, with carpenter Courtney Sutton of Northern Revival Co. designing the piece, and the extraordinary vision of Lee Higginson of Fluke Craft that painted the cupboard, making it quite an artpiece for all the town to see.
The cupboard aims to provide those in need access personal items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap and feminine hygiene products.
Wilton adds that in the warmer months other items such as shampoo and body wash will be available, and she adds she is taking suggestions.
She says making donations is easy.
She says a lot of people in this community helped give this cupboard life.
The Rose Project has twice been awarded a Town of Port Hope Civic Award for Community Service.
Wilton hopes that in a year she can also open a cupboard in Cobourg.
