The Cobourg Library has gone “fine-free” for teens and children.
This pilot project is aimed at eliminating barriers to services which extend well beyond providing books.
According to library CEO Tammy Robinson, fines have been shown to be a deterrent to those who very well may need the Library most.
Joining other communities like Peterborough, Ajax, Oshawa, and Brighton, the Cobourg library has decided to go fine-free for kids and teens.
Robinson told us that fines create barriers to those who need the libraries services the most and make up less than two percent of revenues.
Robinson shared that they’ve decided to join many libraries in the area in removing fines for kids, based largely on experiences gained during COVID when they removed fines and fees during the lockdown.
Contrary to popular beliefs, fines don’t teach children responsibility, but only hinder their access to reading materials.
Financial contributions, such as yours, will help in eliminating this barrier to service for the youngest in our community.
